Eastlands – 25th September 2014

Eastlands - 25th September 2014

I persuaded Richard to take me out to Eastlands for the afternoon/evening so he could sign me off, ready for some rough shooting later in the season. Sunny and warm, it was like a day at the beach on the shingle over the sea wall.

We hung around for several hours, eventually pitching up on the delph corner to await the evening.

Deeks out, we waited… and waited…

At last light a slim duck flew over the wall, already committed to landing. Lugging the decoys all the way out there was a waste of time on this occasion. I must be getting better as somehow I hit it in the gloom, rewarded my patience with a satisfying splash.

A minute or two later a single came over (Teal?), but I reacted too slow to take a shot. Another two followed, too slow again. Richard had a very late punt without success and that was it, just 5 mins of action.

Harry retrieved the bird, a female Pintail and we packed up. I think Think that’s the first time I’ve come home with more than him.

Gore Saltings – 1st September 2014

Afternoon tide and evening flight on Gore Saltings with Richard.  Nice weather and surprisingly no one else on the marsh. We were expecting it to be choca bloc as it was the first day of the season.  First chance passed by as I was turned the wrong way.  Second came as tide was rising.  Pair of Teal.  Got the first with first shot, but couldn’t manage the second; should have.

Richard managed a Teal from a pair whilst I was faffing about, as usual.  Harry made a nice retrieve.

All quiet as tide went out, but as evening came we both bagged a Mallard from a group of three and at last light Richard got another Teal, which Harry found pretty swiftly out on the mud.

26-03-2014 crop smallPhoned Tony Towns on Monday from work to see if there was a chance of some Pigeon shooting to find I caught him in the middle of drilling Barley. Although I wasn’t thinking of going out mid week, he was keen not to wait for the weekend, so I took Wednesday afternoon off work and I popped over there with the Harry all the kit.

Howletts (Beater’s Day) – 25th January 2014

25th Jan 2014_1
25th Jan 2014_3It dawned on me 500 yrds from the shoot lodge that I’d forgotten my wellies, so I turned around and called Paul to explain I’d be late. He was just leaving for the second time himself and I ended up passing him on my way home (Jay had “forgotten” to clean her teeth). Arrived at the shoot and started to get ready when guess who pulls up, Paul, who’d had to go back for a second time to pick up his lunch.

On White Gate drive we stood on the road behind Jo and Derek for what turned out as Harry’s only stint of picking up for the day. Very glad we did as Harry picked a cock pheasant that Jo hadn’t realised she had brought down.

They all finished the day with about 75 for 460 odd shots.

Brandy Hole – 23rd January 2014

Brandy Hole - 23rd January 2014_1
Even though most of the UK is covered in standing water I bunked off work early as the forecast didn’t look too bad and high tide time looked ok. Harry had a little hunt in the rough field away from the marsh, then we set-up land side of the sea wall (but not right down the end).

The only birds flying were Rooks coming across the Crouch from the other side. Eventually had a pop at one which dropped like a stone to my second shot. Didn’t pick it as I had left Harry’s vest in the car and didn’t want him getting cold for a corvid. The shots disturbed some Widgeon, who flew too far out over the river from the direction of the sea wall end. They were the only duck I saw.

Caught the edge of some really dark clouds with rain at the close, which turns out had dropped a lot of hail at Battlesbridge.

Howletts – 18th January 2014

0 for 2 shots from Nelsons whilst standing in Polo Field – Mick said they have been roosting in the trees at the Priory so need to be on form). He was right and a lovely bird curled between myself and Mick heading right for it, which we both missed.
0 for 5 from the woods as back Gun on Joey’s – Took the tail feathers out of a Partridge, but it flew on.
As there were only about 12 Guns today they decided we would all shoot each drive and they would just place us out as we went.
0 for 2 at Pine Trees – Right at the end of the drive Nick clipped a bird and I failed to bring it down with both barrels. Should have left it as a better bird flew over as we were both reloading.
0 for nil from Gravel
0 for 2 from College – Hit a Hen that came down in cover behind me. Whilst they pushed the small bit of cover outside White Gate through, Dave and his dog helped me look for it, then Garry and his Spaniel joined in. Without success. Ended up missing a great drive and just caught the end watching a couple of nice high birds come over the trees, Dave Snowling hit one with his second barrel after letting Nick have a go.
0 for nil on Mapletree – few nice birds went back to walking along Mapletree Lane
2 for 4 – Started from track in Plastic wood and walked down to Peg. A woodcock flew over as I was talking to ?? about Pete missing an easy one last week. Doh! (hit a third Pheasant that had just been shot by Laurie, so didn’t count bird or shot)
1 for 4 on Last drive

Bag for the day (3 birds for 19 shots)
